First few weeks - NYC

Apartment in Greenpoint, 4th floor. Landlord’s a maniac. I can see this sliver, through the front bedroom window, of Manhattan. It’s also the direction the sun sets and there’s nice moments of glowing afternoon light. When it’s really quiet, especially in the middle of the night, I can feel the G train rumbling on the tracks underground… Lot’s of spatial relationship adjustments: shoulder to shoulder grocery shopping, chair to chair Thai restaurants, stampedes up stairs whooshing by stampedes down. So many people - fuck. “Foul moods on the average,” like Nas says. So much to do, see, avoid…

Got MoMA and New Museum memberships for my birthday. Been twice to MoMA, twice to the Met, once to PS1, twice to Chelsea Galleries. Overwhelmed by influential work - it’s almost too much. There’s that threat here of spending all your time consuming, which erodes your time to process. Those in the trenches seem to have just sped up their processing to keep up with their consumption. People like to talk about how overwhelmed they were at first in New York until at some point they just “got it”. I’m going to try to use this tumblr to keep pace, in particular with artwork. I’d rather have a paragraph of impressions I can refer to than a cocktail conversation I forget. I pledge to not use the word “amaaazzzing”.

Whirlwind city. Just turned 34. Almost Thanksgiving. Saw that someone spray-painted on a construction wall down the street “Mifest destiny Gpoint”. Seems like as apropos a mantra as any… B)
